Texas Floods: Death Toll Rises to 27, Dozens Missing from Camp Mystic

At least 27 people have died and 27 girls attending Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp, are missing following catastrophic flooding in Texas.

The flooding, caused by torrential rains along the Guadalupe River, resulted in a rapid rise of 26 feet (7.9m) in under an hour. This "catastrophic flooding," as described by the Kerr County Sheriff's office, swept away mobile homes, vehicles, and holiday cabins.

Camp Mystic, located just outside Kerrville, 104km (64 miles) north-west of San Antonio, was severely impacted. Rescue teams, including 14 helicopters and hundreds of emergency workers utilizing drones, have rescued or evacuated 237 people, with 167 rescued by helicopter alone. Despite these efforts, up to 25 people remain missing.

The Scale of the Disaster

A month's worth of rain fell in a matter of hours. The flooding affected many areas, with a state of emergency declared in several counties. The Texas Division of Emergency Management has mobilized significant resources for the search and rescue operation. President Donald Trump has pledged federal aid.

Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly stated that the magnitude of the disaster was unforeseen. Further rain is expected, with flooding anticipated downriver from Kerr County and around Waco.
